Hi friends. I’m Fay, a singer-songwriter, author, artist, and decluttering pro. My creative work centers on the human condition, imperfection, and my own identity as a Black/Biracial, Bi+/Queer, “half”-Jewish person who is currently alive and will one day die.
I founded my decluttering business, New Order, in 2006, and went on to work one on one with clients in their homes for two decades. Along the way, in 2016, I released my book, New Order: A Decluttering Handbook for Creative Folks (And Everyone Else) (Ballantine Books), and then created an online course based on it.
In 2008, after decluttering a large closet in my old apartment, I put a keyboard in there and, much to my surprise, started writing songs. (I hadn’t written a song since I was 12, when my inner voice told me I wasn’t a writer.) After literally making space for art, the surprises continued. My sad songs started popping up on TV shows, I played a slew of live shows, and it turned out I was a writer after all.
I grew up on stage as an actor, went to college for it, and got my first TV job on a soap opera, where I gave birth in a cabin in the woods (yes, there was a candlelight musical montage). Eventually, I paused my professional auditioning life to make music and write my book. These days, I dabble.
What excites me most about work in all forms is finding and sharing what’s tender, what’s weird, what’s funny, what’s true. And remembering that a little better is…a little better.
I look forward to finding even more ways to combine the ideas of a decluttered life with art. I’ll begin a long-term artist residency in Fall 2027, and also expand my decluttering course offerings, so it’s easier for folks to let go of both inner and outer clutter.
